What is Sports Medicine?

Sports Medicine is the medical care of the active individual which most often involves identifying and correcting the cause of an injury. However, it also includes injury prevention, performance enhancement through training, nutrition and psychology as well as management of medical problems caused by exercise and the role of exercise in chronic disease states.

Because Sports Medicine is such a diverse, wide-ranging discipline it is best delivered with a team approach.  The Medicine In Motion Clinic has the "team behind the teams" with a variety of skilled healthcare professionals who provide quality and comprehensive care to keep individuals as active as possible.

Click on the "Services" tab to see what special skills each of the members of our team has to offer you and your family.

Do Sports Medicine Physicians only treat competitive athletes?

No, Sports Medicine Physicians are an excellent resource for individuals who wish to become active or begin an exercise program. For any active individual who experiences an injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the weekend, recreational athlete as soon as possible to full function.

A Sports Medicine Physician promotes lifelong fitness and wellness and helps the patient maximize function and minimize disability and time away from sports, work or school.

What is the difference between a Sports Medicine Physician and an Orthopedic Surgeon?
Both are well trained in musculoskeletal medicine.  Sports Medicine Physicians specialize in the non-operative medical treatment of joint and muscle injuries and conditions.  Orthopedic Surgeons are trained in the operative management of these same conditions.  However, since approximately 90% of all joint and muscle injuries do not require an operation, the Sports Medicine Physician is ideally suited to initially assess, diagnose and recommend effective rehabilitation for these patients.  A referral from your Family Doctor is required in order to see one of our Sports Medicine Physicians.

What sort of patient problems would my family physician refer to a Sports Medicine Physician?
Sports Medicine Physicians have additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of common musculoskeletal problems as well as the non-musculoskeletal aspects of sports medicine.  Sports Medicine Physicians can assist your Family Doctor with the following:
Acute (ankle sprains, muscle strains, joint injuries) and    overuse (tendonitis, stress fractures) injury assessment and management
“Return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete
Education and counseling on injury prevention
Strength training and conditioning
Healthy lifestyle promotion
Nutrition, supplements and performance issues
Exercise prescription for patients who want to increase their fitness
Sports psychology issues
Coordinating care with other members of the Sports Medicine Team

What does each member of the Sports Medicine Team do?

Each member of the Sports Medicine Team has a special set of skills that allow the team to collectively provide optimal care.  To find out what each team member has to offer you and your family and click on the "Services" tab at the top of this page.

Sports Physiotherapists: Assist individuals to operate at their peak performance by giving advice on the prevention and recovery from injury. They use a range of treatment modalities including manipulation, heat treatment, therapeutic exercise, electrotherapy, ultrasound and hydrotherapy. Their treatment goal is to rehabilitate the injury as quick as possible and ensure an early return to functional activity or sport.

Massage Therapy: There are three areas where sports massage is used to benefit active individuals:

Maintenance Massage: helps to maintain or improve range of motion and muscle flexibility.

Event Massage: Pre-event treatment to enhance muscular circulation and reduce muscular and mental tension prior to competition. Post-event treatment reduces muscular spasm and metabolic build-up.

Rehabilitation: Speed up the healing process and reduce discomfort during rehabilitation from muscular tears, strains, contusions, cramps or aches.

Pedorthist: Individual trained in the assessment, design, manufacture, fit and modification of foot appliances (orthotics) and foot ware for the purposes of reducing pain, re-aligning anatomical structures, improvement of balance, accommodation of foot deformities and control of biomechanical function. They are qualified to assess and treat many conditions of the feet and lower leg.

Nutritionist: Dedicated to promoting nutrition practices that enhance lifelong health, fitness and sport performance through individual and group consultations.

Psychologist: Individual and group consulting or counseling with coaches, athletes, parents and active individuals with the goal of facilitating optimal sports and active lifestyle involvement and performance. This can be achieved using goal setting, concentration, relaxation and imagery techniques. The Psychologist will help individuals develop the mental skills necessary to perform consistently in training and competition and help them reach their potential as people and athletes.

How do I access the services at this clinic?
We recommend that you see your family physician for a referral to see the Sports Medicine Physician. However, there will be some sports teams that will be able to refer their athletes directly to us. You can self-refer for the physiotherapy or massage therapy services, however, most medical insurance plans require a physician referral before they will provide coverage for these services.
